Momentum Scotland Ltd

Momentum Scotland, based at Carlton Court in Glasgow, has four subsidiaries delivering employment and training opportunities for more than 2,000 people every year. People suffering from mental health difficulties or head injuries, which limits their ability to work in mainstream employment, are among the target clients. Funding was sought to meet the cost of purchasing a headquarters building for the entire Scottish operation at a cost of £1.2m and to provide a stable asset base within its balance sheet to support future growth. This will also make the company more attractive when tendering for contractual work with bodies such as the Department of Work and Pensions.

Momentum leverged in £700,000 of commercial funding from the Royal Bank of Scotland and required £500,000 from the Scottish Investment Fund (SIF). SIF provided an investment package tailored to momentum's specific needs made up of a mix of loan and grant.

Momentum put people at the heart of what they do and their training and employment programmes enable people to gain the skills necessary to live independently and to have an equal chance of gaining mainstream employment. Their whole ethos surrounds equality regarding chances, choices and futures. They support 2,000 people each year to maximise their opportunities in life and to live independently through a range of health, social care, employment, training and personal development services.

A predictive social return on investment ('SROI') calculation has been undertaken taking into account the beneficiary outcomes based on projected figures for the next three years. It also takes cognisance of the added value to the organisation of having one HQ building instead of being scattered, the effect the purchase will have on the balance sheet strength and the social value of the work carried out.  The resulting social return is estimated in excess of £4.3m over three years, giving an SROI index of £7.67 returned for each £1 invested through the Scottish Investment Fund.

"Since 1990 we have continually expanded and developed new innovative and person-centred services. We have a significant impact on the lives of thousands of disabled and socially-excluded people each year by supporting them to remain acrive citizens within their own communities through the provision of mainstream training, employment and personal support services. Thanks to the significant award, we can continue to build equal chances, equal choices and equal futures for people in Scotland."
